Looking for a Free Content Filter?

opendnsAre you tired of bad sites / porn popping up with accidental clicks? Are you worried about your children being exposed / having access to things they should not see? Are you looking for accountability on the internet? If you answered yes to any of these questions then we have a suggestion. Here at South Hills Evangelical Church we use OpenDNS to filter our internet traffic. Here is another article on this service. This is superior to other content filters because it happens at the server level rather than downloading to your computer first and getting blocked. OpenDNS provides this services for free if you setup your DNS to route through their server. Now for most people I might as well have said you had to fly to the moon as you don't know how to change your router or even what that means. That is ok. You have two options available to you:

Option 1: Set it up and monitor it yourself

Follow their well written steps to setup the content filter on your own router. I know that sounds scary but OpenDNS makes it easy to follow their steps.

Option 2: Have South Hills Evangelical Church set-up your account and monitor it for you.

This has advantages and disadvantages. The biggest advantage to this is that we will setup a time to take over your computer (with your help/permission) and setup the filter over the internet. Also we will moderate the traffic, so if you are looking for accountability this is a great option. It will be setup so we have to approve exceptions to the block list and this will severely hinder the ability and temptation to access bad sites.

Which one is right for me?

Ask yourself these questions:

Q1. If you need to access a website and it is blocked would it bother you to wait 24 hrs for a SHEC technician to add the site to your whitelist?

A1.  Then choose option 1.

Q2. Do you want it to be setup for you?

A2. Then choose option 2 and email us here to setup a time to help you out.

Feel free to email us if you have questions about this topic.
